One of the easiest ways to make me cry is to dismiss my concerns for Lula Dog or my abilities as her caretaker and companion. Like when I worry about her anxiety or emotional well-being and someone says “she’s just a dog.” Or when I’m concerned about a new rash or ailment (she’s had so many) and someone rolls their eyes at me. I take my relationship with Lula — who is almost completely dependent on me while being nonverbally limited her ability to communicate her health and needs to me — very seriously.

I’m not one of those people who just considers her an animal or entertainment, or takes my responsibilities as a dog owner lightly. She is my Companion; I have a relationship with her. I love her, and we are so very bonded to each other. She is the best person I know: she always treats others with kindness and love. She has been with me through so much, and she is my best friend.

I’ve been with her for over seven years, after someone dumped her and left her for dead in the Utah desert, barely weaned at five weeks old. I nursed her through a myriad of puppyhood illnesses. When I was bedridden for six months, she never left my side. When a 125 pound Irish Wolfhound attacked her, I punched it in the face. When I was being mugged, she saved me. When she was being chased down by a pack of dogs, I shielded her with my body and let them bite and attack me instead. She and I know each other and look out for each other better than some siblings or spouses.

And so, when someone rolls their eyes at my relationship with her or dismisses my concerns and abilities as her caretaker… I cry.

When I was 14, my mom and stepdad shelled out $1500 to save our Rottweiler, Baby. I remember my stepmom and stepgrandmother making snide comments about my mom “wasting money on a stupid dog”. I stood up from the table and looked them dead in the eye and said…

“I would spend $1500 to save my dog before I’d spend a dollar to save either of you.”

And dramatically exited the room before they could see me cry.

Do not EVER question the love I have for my pets, because they are more than that to me. They are members of my family, and just because you don’t understand does not give you the right to judge me.

I seriously can’t even read these comments without wanting to tear up. I have spent so much money on my dog’s health. I can’t understand how anyone could not. They are your responsibility. They give you everything they possibly can, their complete love and devotion, and they put their trust in you to take care of them because they can’t do it themselves. Heck, when I see stray dogs, my heart breaks and I wish I could take them all home and give them a big field to run around in and be happy the way dogs should be, while having all their needs met. Dogs are marvelous creatures. I cannot even begin to grasp the thinking of anyone who can say “It’s just a dog (or cat, or any pet for that matter)”. It’s just an animal who loves you with every ounce of their being and who would give their life to protect you. How can anyone not care about the health and comfort of their dog after feeling this love and devotion?

… felt this way about the animal(s) they owned, like these three individuals do, there would be no more need for the ASPCA.

Another Day, Another Surgery...

Mommy just spoke with the vets office and it looks like I am destined to have yet another surgery.

At least this time it’s not for my eye.

My baby canine teeth have not fallen out- I currently have 4 canine’s on the top. The adult teeth are now almost as long as the baby ones. Surgery will be scheduled for sometime early next week.

Mom is going to attempt to get some pictures.

I don’t think I will hold still though.

Update: Found this picture on the internet. Similar to what Kepa’s look like. Will still try to get a picture of her’s though.

I’m working on a new blog post about my mishap at the dog park last Thursday but I wanted to share this real quick. It’s pretty sad when my vet is on speed dial, 4th in line behind my grandma, daddy, and grandpa.

If I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.
